School and COVID-19

Here’s my new “back to school” cartoon. This isn’t the “back to school” time of year, but there is a lot of news now about when and how schools will reopen with the coronavirus still raging.

Everyone tells me that I should post my messy rough sketches online. I’m told that this shows I’m a real person, and that readers love a “window into my process.” The temptation is to draw nicer looking roughs since I know people will see them, but that would take me down a slippery slope into cartoon madness.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

I took a stroll through our archives for some recent, favorite coronavirus/school cartoons. Here are the ones I like!

Pat Bagley, The Salt Lake Tribune

John Cole, The Scranton Times-Tribune

Jeff Koterba, The Omaha World-Herald

No School During the Pandemic!

Here’s a special advance look at my new cartoon that goes out to newspapers tomorrow. Cartoons about about kids sheltering at home, while schools are closed for the pandemic, are among the most popular cartoons with editors. I have included a batch of my favorite pandemic/school cartoons below.

Teacher Strike!

Teachers in Los Angeles go on strike on Monday. My wife teaches math in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and tells me that her colleagues are all charged up. The teachers have chosen to wear red as their strike color, so the picket lines and demonstrations will have coordinated look.

The teachers are unified in their disdain for the district superintendent, Austin Beutner, a billionaire known for being pals with local power brokers; he did a stint as publisher of the Los Angeles Times; he was a failed candidate for mayor, and he is a tireless promotor of privatizing schools. Teachers love to deride Beutner for having no experience in education, although he created a lovely charity for giving eyeglasses to poor children and he’s a bigwig behind Cal Arts, the excellent, Disney-created art college. Beutner is seen as a union-busting oligarch and a bad guy in teachers’ circles.

We see red-clad groups of protesting teachers all over town this weekend and we’ll see lots more next week. I rarely draw local cartoons, but there’s good reason for this one. The local newspapers oppose the teachers so my cartoon may not get much press, but my wife will carry it on her sign.

Students vs the NRA

I’m impressed with the Parkland, Florida high school kids who are standing up to the NRA with impressive eloquence.

A couple of people tell me the kid’s ears are too big. Oh well. With the NRA its always something.

The Tank-Man from the Tiananmen Square massacre is a great metaphor that is seldom used for anything other than China. Standing up and speaking truth to power is what we should all strive for. The NRA likes to argue that they are a civil rights organization, standing up against those who would take away our constitutional rights. In fact the NRA is the establishment, controlling our legislators and putting us all in danger in the guise of patriotism. The kids see through the NRA clearly.

The TrumpCare Cliff

I love those little lemmings who all commit mass-suicide by leaping off of cliffs in the Arctic. The lemmings metaphor is a standard for editorial cartoonists and I’ve drawn them a few times myself. Here is today’s cartoon with the Republican elephants running off of the TrumpCare cliff.

Gotta love those lemmings. Here’s one I drew for the “Arab Spring” revolution in Egypt …

Seven years ago when congress was debating ObamaCare, I drew this Democrat lemmings cartoon …

This is one of my most popular and most plagiarized cartoons, about graduate lemmings and unemployment …

I drew these lemmings in 2007 when we had the mortgage and housing collapse …

I’m sure I’ll be drawing plenty more lemmings during the Trump administration. Want to see me draw the new TrumpCare lemmings cartoon in real time? Watch the video below. You can watch it at 1.5 speed which makes it 150% more interesting!

And here is the video of my coloring the GOP lemmings cartoon in Photoshop on my Wacom Cintiq …

Tennessee Bathroom Bill?

Here’s my new Tennessee flag, commemorating the legislature’s top priority, a prospective special session to regulate transgender access to bathrooms.

The Tennessee legislature is all in a lather to hold a special session to make a bathroom bill much like North Carolina’s infamous bathroom bill. Read about it here in my local newspaper, the Tennessean.

2000px-Flag_of_Tennessee.svgWhat conservative Republicans have in common is an insatiable passion for regulating all things sexual. That’s the Tennessee flag at the right. The story behind the flag is fascinating. In the 1800’s Tennessee hired a graphic designer to make a new flag. The three stars in the center stand for Western, Middle and Eastern Tennessee. The stripe at the right means nothing – the designer just thought it made the flag look better. Gotta love history.
