Over a million people are expected to watch the space shuttle Atlantis launch on Friday, the final mission of NASA’s 30-year space shuttle program. Everyone wonders what will come next, even as lawmakers voted today to kill off funding for the successor to the vastly successful Hubble telescope.

American Flag Cartoons

Political cartoonists are a patriotic lot. You may not think it as they bash every politician that passes by and criticize nearly every aspect of the apparatus of our government, but their ultimate goal is to embarrass our current crop of Washington inhabitants into living up to the promise of our great country.

Cartoonists are all about symbols, and there is no more memorable symbol of our country, especially on Independence Day, then the stars and stripes.

Dave Granlund uses the layout of the flag as a way to remember those who fight and have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom…

Mike Keefe of the Denver Post uses the flag to put our debt, and debt holders, into context…

Florida Today cartoonist Jeff Parker gives us a quick reminder who provides us with the freedom our flag symbolizes…

Adam Zyglis of the Buffalo News worries about our growing prison population in his flag cartoon…

Costa Rican cartoonist Arcadio Esquivel reminds us about the origins of our country with his cartoon…

While Columbia Daily Tribune cartoonist John Darkow lets us know all American flags should come with an asterisk…

Arcadio also used the flag as a symbol to denounce America’s gun violence…

…a thought echoed by Mike Keefe…

Blagojevich Cartoons

Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, who famously tried to sell the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama, was found guilty on 17 of 20 federal corruption charges, and faces up to 300 years behind bars. Interestingly, Blagojevich becomes the second straight Illinois governor convicted of corruption. His predecessor, George Ryan, is now serving 6 1/2 years in federal prison.

Check out what cartoonists think of Blago in our new Blagojevich Convicted cartoon slideshow

Harville Retires From Cartooning

I just learned that Vic Harville, my buddy and a long-time contributor to Cagle.com, has officially reitred from his position as the staff cartoonist for the Stephens Media Group newspapers.

Vic’s planned retirement is different than many cartoonists in recent memory who have been scurried out of the office by security after receiving their corporate pink slips. Vic drew a farewell cartoon to his readers, which I’ve posted to the right.

Vic drew cartoons for the big Stephens Media Group’s entire chain of newspapers, which stretches from South Carolina to Hawaii; he was mostly known for his jabs at local Arkansas subjects, making a name for himself at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the state’s largest newspaper, before he moved on to Stephens Media’s Little Rock bureau.  Arkansas gave Vic some larger-than-live characters to poke and prod over his 25-year cartooning career, including two natural cartoon characters, governors Bill Clinton and Mike Huckabee.

Even though he’s retiring, it’s hard to keep a good cartoonist down. Vic says he’ll still freelance a bit, and continue tohis series of full-page Arkansas Razorback illustrations.

Here are some of Vic’s recent cartoons. We’ll keep his archives up on Cagle.com here, where he tells me he’ll keep posting new stuff every now and then, when he’s not fishing.

Afghanistan Drawdown Cartoons

President Barack Obama is expected to announce tonight a start to a drawdown of troops in Afghanistan. Numbers are sketchy, but reports say it could be as much as 10,000 troops now, followed by 30,000 surge troops by the end of 2012. New presidential candidate Jon Huntsman says this is is “a little slow and a little cautious,” while opponents from both the right and left disagree with aspects of Obama’s plan.

Cartoonists have their own opinion about our war in Afghanistan, now in its 11th year. Check out their thoughts in our new Afghanistan Drawdown cartoon slideshow.

Jon Huntsman Cartoons

Former Utah governor Jon Huntsman has entered the crowded field of Republicans seeking to oust President Obama, saying that America needs “more than hope” as he formally announced his candidacy today.

No cartoonist knows Huntsman better than our man in Utah, Pat Bagley, the brilliant long-time staffer at the Salt Lake Tribune. Bagley is a lefty cartoonist fighting against all odds in a heavily-conservative state where the Mormon church holds sway.

With Huntsman entering the race, now the GOP has two Morman candidates to chose from. Will it hurt him among conservative voters?

Certainly Huntsman won’t be winning a Tony Award for his announcement…

For a Republican party interested in the best possible candidate, the future can be a bit uncertain…

Will Huntsman’s role as President Obama’s ambassador to China hurt his conservative street cred?

If not that, maybe his support of Civil Unions might upset conservative voters…
