Dumping Refugees on the Dems

President Trump threatened to dump migrants on sanctuary cities last week. The mayors of the sanctuary cities, and the governor of my sanctuary state, California, all say that they welcome the refugees and I think they are sincere in that. What Trump sees as dumping human garbage on his political opponents to prove their hypocrisy would really amount to placing the migrants in places that are the most likely to truly welcome them and help them on their difficult journey. Much of the media buzz has been about how terrible Trump’s intentions are and how the move would be illegal; little attention has been paid to the fact that it is could be good for the migrants.

My cartoon shows how Trump views the plan.

Here are some of my recent migrant favorites by my cartoonist buddies. The migrant plan is the brainchild of Trump’s nefarious advisor, Stephen Miller, who Steve Sack contrasts with Melania.

My pal, Monte Wolverton draws the weaponization of migrants.

Trump seems to be fenced in by the law, as seen by my pal, John Cole.

My buddy Nate Beeler draws our “full” country.

My conservative buddy, Rick McKee sees opportunities to bash Democrats everywhere.

Wall Emergency!

President Trump has declared a wall emergency so he can build a border wall after a bruising battle with congress, which rejected his wall plans. We have lots of Declaration of Emergency cartoons! Here’s mine from yesterday.

This is my favorite emergency cartoon, from Dave Whamond

These three are by my buddy, Steve Sack

This is from my buddy, Rick McKee

And my buddy, Dave Granlund

Listeš is NEW!

I’m pleased to announce we’ve added a new cartoonist here at Cagle.com – Nikola Listeš from Croatia – wordless works are charming and funny. See Nikola’s archive here. And here are some favorites. This first one about French President Macron made me laugh.

This cartoon about the European Union’s migrant problem is a delight.

This American border wall cartoon is a charmer.

Great work Nikola!

Heartless Trump

Donald Trump doesn’t seem to have much compassion, prosecuting immigrants seeking asylum, separating them from their children. I thought I would take a cookie-cutter approach to this issue, so here is heartless president Trump.

Ivanka Trump, who is in charge of women’s and children’s issue in the White House, reportedly urged her dad to take action to prevent the family separations, resulting in the recent executive order to keep families together for the first 20 days of the years it will take for the immigration courts to convict their parents. Ivanka hasn’t said anything compassionate publicly, so I drew her as heartless too.

Melania Trump famously took a trip to visit a facility that imprisoned immigrant children and wore a jacket imprinted with the words, “I REALLY DON’T CARE  DO U?” So I drew her as heartless too, in this heartless, cookie-cutter family cartoon portrait.

I was going to draw Trump with heartless Jeff Sessions and DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen – but I thought I would have to put a label on Kirstjen Nielsen, and three cookie-cutter cartoons seemed a little much.

Melania and Ivanka reportedly have the ear of the president on this issue; I’d like to see more cartoonists hold their heartless souls to the fire.

… Funny, now it is later in the day and I’m getting emails from readers about how I put their hearts on the wrong side. The real reason is that I’m dyslexic and sloppy. I could say they had their hearts in the right place –no. Oops. OK! OK! I did a correction …

ICE Pee

Forcibly separating children from their parents at the border makes for lots of great editorial cartoons. I did this one over the weekend and I’m working on another one now.

There is an interesting disconnect in the press about the criticism of this ugly Trump policy. The more alarm raised by critics, and the more attention raised to the separations and detentions, the more likely it becomes that refugees will be deterred from entering into the USA illegally, and therefore, the more Trump will be beloved by his heartless base – who see the Bible as supporting Trump’s immigration planning.

Still, the bad press must sting the ICE agents and the people who carry out this heartless policy, like a bit of pee to the eye.

Delonas Cartoon Controversy

We syndicated this cartoon by Sean Delonas which has caused some controversy.

The cartoon was run in the Albuquerque Journal, which got blowback from local readers and politicians. The New York Times also wrote about the controversy. The Albuquerque Journal editor who ran the cartoon apologized. Here is a statement I gave to reporters.

Our conservative cartoonist, Sean Delonas, gave us this statement about the cartoon:

I stand 100% behind the cartoon. The cartoon, for the most part, is about use of the word “dreamers.”  Politicians always give pleasing labels to bills that most Americans don’t want.

I do not have a problem with legal immigration, only illegal immigration. Sure, many illegal immigrants are good people; and many of them take advantage of our social services and some are criminals such as MS-13.

What bothers me the most is that it is becoming harder for people to voice their opinions in this country; if they offer an opinion that is unpopular (particularly with the left), attempts are made to shut down their voices by calling them racist, sexist, etc…  At my age, I could care less what people call me.

I do feel sorry for The Albuquerque Journal editor who published my cartoon.  She looks like a nice person and I regret that she’s taking heat for my cartoon.

Sean Delonas

We regularly get complaints from readers who are offended by our cartoons. Much of our email is from readers who demand that we should censor and apologize for the editorial cartoons that offend them. Usually these complaints come from the right, as most of our cartoons criticize President Trump.

We don’t edit our cartoons for political point of view. We look to the spectrum of political debate to decide what is appropriate to syndicate and this cartoon is consistent with what we hear from the right end of the political spectrum.

Sean Delonas, has drawn this cartoon in support of President Trump’s view that “illegal immigrants” bring violent crime to America; the cartoon responds to the president’s recent comments about the MS-13 gang.

I’m not surprised that this cartoon sparks outrage. It is up to each newspaper editor to decide what is appropriate to run in their own newspaper.

My personal view is that I agree with the critics of Sean’s cartoon.

Truly,

Outraged readers aren’t shy about their condemnation of the cartoon. Here are a couple of examples from Twitter.

USA vs Mexico

Sorry to be away from doing the videos for so long! Yesterday I streamed my process drawing this one and you can see the whole thing in real time in the YouTube videos below. Here’s the angry face-off between the Trump-USA and Mexican eagles.

The Mexican eagle really should face the other way, but I flipped the bird.

The video below shows me drawing this one, from scratch, on paper, with a pencil.

In the next video I’m coloring the cartoon in Photoshop …

Yes! The beard is gone for the foreseeable future! (I know that is shocking – it’s still me … really.)

Mexico Flips Us the Bird

I drew this Mexican flag, “flipping the bird” cartoon eleven years ago when the Mexican government was distributing brochures they created to give advice to Mexicans who were hiking across dangerous, unprotected border areas (they should bring a hat and lots of water to drink).

Today the Mexican public is heaping accolades on their unpopular president, Enrique Peña Nieto; maybe this is just what Peña Nieto needs.

Trump’s Trip to Mexico

Donald Trump made a surprise trip to Mexico today. He is rather unpopular in Mexico, which led me to draw this cartoon featuring Mexico’s famous Angel of Independence statue reacting to Trump’s greeting.

trumpMexico

The Angel of Independence in Mexico City is the scene of frequent political protests and is an icon in Mexico like the Statue of Liberty is to us. One of my favorite cartoonists in Mexico, Angel Boligan, draws the Angel often, and I thought I would post a few – here she is in one that Boligan calls “Sin City”

sincity

And here she is as a cigarette …

angelCigarette

Here she’s replaced by the police.

AngelPolice

And in this one, she seems to have lost her motivation – or found new motivation …

The GOP and the Refugee Doorway

The Republicans are trying hard to push back against the inflows of refugees and immigrants. Here’s my take. Often when I do cartoons that have muted colors, I get complaints from editors who want brighter colors. Refugees don’t lend themselves well to bright colors.

Often when I do cartoons have have muted colors, I get complaints from editors who want brighter colors. Refugees don’t lend themselves well to bright colors. I’m trying to do more texture in my cartoons now. Here’s a detail.

refugeeDoorDetail

Here’s my rough and dirty sketch. You can see that I fiddled around with the position of the elephant’s trunk before I was happy with it.

Doorsketch

I put a “Thanks to Michael Kounturis” in the lower left. Michael works out of Athens, Greece and he is one of my favorite cartoonists; he recently came back to our CagleCartoons.com newspaper syndicate package after a hiatus. My GOP Doorway cartoon was inspired by Michael’s cartoon below.

I stole a lot from Michael’s cartoon, including the position of the door and the guy pushing back on the door – and the general composition with the doorway poking up, off-center. It is all lovely – so thanks, Michael, and you have my apologies for ripping you off! See more of Michael’s great cartoons here.
