Most Popular Cartoons of the Pandemic

Here are the top ten most popular cartoons of the pandemic, from February 1st through May 4th, 2020. These are the cartoons that our newspaper subscribers chose to print from nearly 2,000 pandemic cartoons delivered from our syndication service, CagleCartoons.com. About half of America’s daily, paid-circulation newspapers subscribe to CagleCartoons.com, so these are likely the cartoons that most newspaper readers have seen in the past three months, appearing in hundreds of newspapers.

Regular readers of our blog and newsletter see our collection of the top ten cartoons every week, and have probably already seen all of these in our weekly collections, but this list puts them in perspective. (Subscribe to our free email newsletter so you never miss our weekly “Top Ten Most Popular Cartoons”.)

What really stands out is the stellar performance of freelance cartoonist, Rick McKee, who has the number one most popular pandemic cartoon and who crushes the coronavirus field with a whopping three cartoons dominating the pandemic top ten. Rick was recently laid off from The Augusta Chronicle newspaper in Georgia (what a mistake that was). The number two cartoon belongs to Steve Sack of The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The rest in the top ten will be familiar to all of our fans.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you! Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

In third place there is a tie between Rick McKee and Steve Sack.

The fifth place cartoon comes from Gannett freelancer, Dave Granlund.

The sixth place cartoon is the third cartoon in the top ten that comes from Rick McKee.

The seventh place cartoon is the number one cartoon from last week, by John Cole of The Times-Tribune in Scranton Pennsylvania.

The eighth place cartoon comes from the Canadian cartoon maestro, Dave Whamond, who is the only non-American in the top ten.

The ninth place cartoon comes from Adam Zyglis, the cartoonist for the Buffalo News in New York.

#10

The tenth place cartoon comes Dave Fitzsimmons of The Arizona Daily Star.

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (April 25 -May 2). Sorry I’m a little late this week, we had some technical problems over the weekend –but here they are!

20% of the cartoonists draw 80% of the cartoons that get reprinted. We have dozens of cartoonists in our little syndicate, but only a few cartoons each week catch the fancy of editors and that is easy to see this week. Bruce Plante of The Tulsa World newspaper in Oklahoma has three cartoons in this week’s top ten most reprinted cartoons. Gannett’s freelance cartoonist Dave Granlund and John Cole of The Times-Tribune in Scranton Pennsylvania round out the list with two each, with John taking the prize for the most popular cartoon of the week –about golf.

The second most reprinted cartoon is this one, by Bruce Plante.

The third most popular cartoon with newspaper editors this week is this one, also by John Cole.

Bruce Plante is on a tear this week, with a whopping three cartoons in the top ten. Here are two more winners from Bruce.

Here’s Rick McKee, with one of two non-coronavirus cartoons in the top ten.

Dave Granlund has two in the top ten, including the other non-coronavirus cartoon.

This popular coronavirus gem comes from Dave Fitzsimmons.

And number ten is this graduation cartoon by Jeff Koterba.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Trump’s expert on infectious diseases, has become a familiar face at the frequent, White House coronavirus news conferences –however he seems to be appearing less and less at these events as scientists don’t seem very comfortable working alongside the president. Last Thursday America was fascinated to see President Trump pushing one of his medical experts to conduct research on crazy and harmful proposed cures for COVID-19, including drinking or injecting toxic disinfectants and shining light inside the body. I got emails from quacks pushing bleach pills soon after Trumps spectacle. This scary nonsense led to lots of cartoons –see the best of the batch below, with a second installment tomorrow as these cartoons are still coming in.

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (April 18 -25).

I wanted to write about how much I appreciate your messages of support since we started our crowd-funding effort to support Cagle.com. Usually our email consists of complaints from readers who disagree with cartoons –often demanding apologies or demanding that I punish or fire cartoonists, or that I remove the cartoons that readers find offensive, disagreeable or wrong. I guess it is the negative nature of the internet.

But with our fund raising campaign I’m getting charming, kind words from lots of readers about how much they enjoy the cartoons and how they look forward to getting their Cagle.com newsletter in their email box every day. It is a Bizarro world that has flipped my email box from nasty to lovely, as I’m hearing from our normally silent fans. It warms my heart!

We still need much more support to keep the cartoons coming as so many of our troubled newspaper clients have fallen behind in paying their bills. We’re also facing a big increase in hacker attacks now. (I apologize for the annoying pages on Cagle.com that make you wait a few seconds while Cloudflare checks your IP address to make sure you’re a real person and not just another “denial-of-service” attack.)
