Stormy!

This is my first Stormy Daniels cartoon. Somehow I think there will be more to come.

I thought it would be a funny caricature to chop off most of her face, because it is her big, pointy chin and thin, straight lips that are distinctive. I could have done the caricature with no face at all, since her colossal boobs are all she needs for a caricature. I’ve noticed that other cartoonists give Stormy a breast reduction in their drawings – an unusual situation for cartoonists who typically exaggerate features. I also liked the idea of a composition where the top/right half of the image is empty.

We have lots more great Stormy Daniels cartoons on Cagle.com! Come look!

Congratulations, Putin

There was a “big story” a couple of days ago about president Trump calling and congratulating Russian president Putin on his “election” victory. Trump had been given notes from his staff for the call, with a warning in all caps urging him not to congratulate Putin, probably because Putin’s election was bogus as top opponents weren’t allow to run, and in the wake of Russia’s attempted assassination of a double agent in England. This led to more speculation about why Trump seems to compliment Putin at every opportunity, which quickly turned into banter about who leaked the story.

This story would hang around for a while in normal times, but the news moves so fast these days the story was over about the time I finished drawing my cartoon. Gotta draw faster.

Guns and Puppies

There will be a big march on Washington for gun control, led by students who are energized by the threats they face with the continuing plague of school shootings. Politicians appears to be deaf to the outrage.

If gunmen shot puppies instead of people the politicians might jump to take action. An incident where a flight attendant forced a passenger to put his puppy in an overhead bin, where the puppy asphyxiated and died, has energized politicians with outrage and calls to action. Clearly, puppies are the priority in Congress.

Here’s how my cartoon looked in USA Today, yesterday.

Stephen Hawking Memorial Cartoons

Physicist Stephen Hawking passed away this week at the age of 76 and I distributed many editorial cartoon tributes to newspapers. Readers love memorial cartoons, often passing along their warm feelings about a celebrity to the cartoonist. We get more fan mail from memorial cartoons than anything else we draw.

Hawking’s memorials have drawn more criticism than praise. Some cartoonists have drawn the professor ascending into heaven – even though Hawking was an atheist and didn’t believe in heaven. We saw the same thing some years ago when Apple founder Steve Jobs, a Buddhist, was depicted in scores of cartoons at the Pearly Gates.

Many other cartoons depict Hawking rising out of his wheelchair, ascending to the stars. Pennsylvania cartoonist, Sean Delonas, drew Hawking leaving his wheelchair behind and walking up a starry stairway. Others show Hawking flying, among the stars, above his wheelchair.

Hawking was an advocate for the rights of the disabled. He was quoted in Science Digest saying, “My disabilities have not been a significant handicap in my field, which is theoretical physics … Indeed, they have helped me in a way by shielding me from lecturing and administrative work that I would otherwise have been involved in.”

Critics of the images on social media make the point that Hawking was defined by his ideas rather than his disability. Some saw the wheelchair as part of who Hawking was and were troubled to see Hawking’s “identity” functionally erased in the images.

In a Los Angeles Times article, Jessica Roy writes, “Showing Hawking leaving his wheelchair behind implies that being in a wheelchair is something to escape. But Hawking’s wheelchair didn’t confine him. With a sophisticated onboard computer, it enabled him to work, to travel, to write and to lecture.”

Austrian cartoonist Marian Kamensky took the arguments about Hawking’s disability to heart by drawing a cartoon showing Hawking in his wheelchair in the sky, saying “No thanks” to an angel who is offering him wings – a sentiment that was sensitive to Hawkings handicap, but not Hawking’s atheism.

When it comes to memorial cartoons, cartoonists need to fly, wheel and walk a fine line.

Xi the Pooh

limWinnie the Pooh is banned on the internet in China because the lovable bear, with a crown on his head, was used as a symbol to criticize Chinese president-for-life, Xi Jinping.

Xi really does look like Winnie the Pooh. China’s parliament recently voted to rescind term limits, allowing Xi to be president as long as he wants. The famous “great firewall of China” came to life to censor all references to Pooh to squelch any possible dissent. China also banned the letter “N” because it was being used in the equation “N > 2” with “N” being the number of terms that the president is allowed as “2” has been changed to infinity. Search terms were also banned, including “my emperor,” “lifelong” and “shameless.”

The great firewall of China also censored the term “#MeToo.” I suppose there must be many sexual abusers in China who feel they need broad protection from criticism. The emojis for bunnies and rice, and the term “#RiceBunny” are censored because “rice, bunny” (米兔) is pronounced “mi tu” in Chinese.

Most of the population of the world lives in nations, like China, where cartoonists are not allowed to draw the leaders of their countries. Cartoonists in some of these nations, such as Egypt, have invented little kings or generals to represent their leaders. I admire the passion of those who struggle to speak truth to power where truth is banned.

Trump Meets Kim Jong Un

Bloody hands are a standard cliché for editorial cartoonists so this is a pretty simple cartoon. I thought I would make it more interesting by having the red blood be the only color in the cartoon.

This cartoon doesn’t really work for newspapers that only have black and white available. When papers have color available, they really want bright colors and pulling back on the color might make them skip this one, even though the color is making a point here. If another cartoonist asked me if he/she should do this, I’d probably tell them no. But, what the heck.

Chaos

I love how the long, red tie has become a standard cliché for editorial cartoonists. It is much more fun the the big ears on Obama and George W. Bush. Everyone thought that Trump’s hair would be the thing that drew the cartoonists together. The long tie is even more fun than Clinton’s dropped pants and boxer shorts with the little hearts.

Trump is arguably more sexually indiscriminate and profligate than Clinton, but the sex issues don’t seem to stick to Trump as easily as they did to a blue dress.

I like the idea of the president tied up into a Gordian Knot. I did the same thing to Obama some years ago, and used it as the cover of my Obama Coloring Book – check out all of my coloring books at CagleBook.com.

Students vs the NRA

I’m impressed with the Parkland, Florida high school kids who are standing up to the NRA with impressive eloquence.

A couple of people tell me the kid’s ears are too big. Oh well. With the NRA its always something.

The Tank-Man from the Tiananmen Square massacre is a great metaphor that is seldom used for anything other than China. Standing up and speaking truth to power is what we should all strive for. The NRA likes to argue that they are a civil rights organization, standing up against those who would take away our constitutional rights. In fact the NRA is the establishment, controlling our legislators and putting us all in danger in the guise of patriotism. The kids see through the NRA clearly.

Inmate Netanyahu

With all the news happening, international stories that would normally get some attention are buried. I even forgot to post this cartoon that I drew more than a week ago.

Israel’s president is facing a big bribery scandal that could send him to jail. It is interesting how little ink this story is getting.

I first drew this with Netanyahu wearing the cartoon classic striped prison suit, without thinking. Here’s some advice for cartoonists: don’t draw Israelis in prison garb that looks like concentration camp suits, even though orange prison suits don’t convert well to black and white.  Sometimes cartoon clichés are best ignored.

Thoughts and Prayers

The politicians who oppose restrictions on gun sales, and who support sales of America’s most popular rifle, the AR-15, the assault rifles that is used in so many of these mass shootings, like to say that their “thoughts and prayers” are with the victims. I’m sick of “thoughts and prayers” from these murder enablers.

Today’s cartoon comes from a thoughtful fan on Facebook, commenting on my last cartoon, which was also about the Parkland, Florida school shooting. Many thanks to Jerry Moore!
