I am writing to protest the outrageous sentence handed down against Iranian artist Atena Farghadani, and to urge her conviction be overturned and Ms. Farghadani freed.
Freedom of expression and association are universal human rights recognized by all civilized nations, including Iran as a signatory to the UN’s International Human Rights Conventions. The arrest and sentencing of Atena Farghadani is a clear violation of those rights, and also of Iran’s own statutes and international agreements. It cannot be allowed to stand.
In the interest of justice and to demonstrate its recognition of universal human rights, Iran must release Atena Farghadani.

Conservative Fluke Cartoon Debated on msnbc
On Tuesday, I posted a conservative cartoon about Sandra Fluke and the Rush Limbaugh birth control rant on my blog by Gary McCoy, who I syndicate through Cagle Cartoons. Since then, there’s been a firestorm of criticism about the nasty tone of the cartoon coming from all quarters of the internet. Media critic Jim Romenesko even posted this side-by-side comparison on his blog:
Today, Now with Alex Wagner host Alex Wagner brought up the cartoon on her msnbc show and debated the finer points of basic healthcare on International Women’s Day.

Susan S.: “This cartoon (and Limbaugh’s remarks) say more about the originators than they do about Ms. Fluke. When did personal insults and ad hominem attacks become acceptable substitutes for political debate?”
Neil J.: “Since when did Rush draw cartoons? Demonizing is sick & wrong for cartoonists and talk radio. Thanks for continuing to poison the dialogue. Epitome of how wrong republicans have become for themselves and the rest of our great country.”

I’ve always felt that most, if not all religious “leaders” are misogynistic war-mongering perverts. Birth control ought to be an individual decision and not subject to legislation.

Rush Limbaugh Poor Choice of Words
Outspoken radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh (click there to view our recent Rush Limbaugh cartoons) has apologized for referring to Georgetown University law school student Sandra Fluke, who is in favor of mandatory employer health coverage of contraception, as a “slut” and a “prostitute.”
Over the past couple of days Limbaugh has lost several of his advertisers over the controversy, including mattress manufacturers Sleep Train and Sleep Number, Quicken Loans and LegalZoom.
Here is Limbaugh’s full apology:
For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.
I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit?In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone’s bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.
My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices.
He doesn’t sound very sorry to me. Here is my most recent cartoon on Rush’s apology.

Readers Respond to ‘War on Women’ Cartoon
For the past few weeks, the rhetoric on the campaign has shifted from the economy and job creation to birth control and women’s reproductive rights. Many cartoonists have weighed in on the topic (view our collection of women’s rights cartoons here), but this cartoon by Adam Zyglis of the Buffalo News stood out.
We’ve had a lot of readers react to the cartoon via our Facebook and Twitter pages. Here just a sample of what they said about the cartoon:
