UKRAINE!

Every day the news is full of Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine. We just can’t seem to get enough Ukraine.

We have a great CagleCartoonist from Ukraine, Vladimir Kazanevsky, who has probably won more international cartooning competitions than any other cartoonist in the world –but the international competition world is a different world, with different aesthetics that seem strange and foreign to an American reader.

I noticed that Vlad hadn’t posted any cartoons about the Ukraine/impeachment scandal and I told him that he is the only cartoonist from Ukraine that American readers are likely to see. Vlad’s perch in Kyiv could make his cartoons interesting to Western editors. Vlad then uploaded these three.

It looks like this jester-trap will draw Trump in as he is lured into watching himself on TV.

.

Here Ukraine is a clown-seal that is getting Trump’s attention …

Here the jester appears to be Ukraine’s brain that is commanding heavy-Trump-the-elephant’s attention.

Vlad’s cartoons are charming, although I must admit that I don’t really understand most of them. This is typical of the international contest cartoonists who have a different cartoon language that doesn’t make much sense to Americans like me. Charming, though.

Here are selections of some of Vlad’s cartoons that I can understand – the first one shows refugees fleeing from a repressive regime.

This one shows our climate-change future.

Here man struggles with oil.

Putin doesn’t seem happy as his cold, Russian Trump-Vodka seems to have turned into poop, which doesn’t go well with caviar.

This charming cartoon shows animals who seem to be demonstrating in favor of their own predators.

All of this is only to show that Vlad is great, but I’m not surprised that we don’t see cartoons from Ukraine in American newspapers even while Ukraine dominates the news.

The photo below shows me with Vlad in Vlad’s studio in Kyiv a few years ago. Behind us are some of Vlad’s trophies from over 500 international cartooning prizes he has won in 52 countries. See Vlad’s archive on Cagle.com.

… And here’s an endangered tree, praying while stuck in place.

Bath Time Cartoons!

As I drew my bathtub cartoon today, I was thinking about my favorite bathtub cartoons. Really. This is Iran’s Supreme Leader having his clean, happy time.

Bathtub fun is a cartoonists’ staple. Here’s my buddy, Steve Sack of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune with a Trump tub.

My bathtub favorite is this Trump and Li’l Kim classic from Taylor Jones.

Here’s what Chinese cartoonist Luojie thinks of how Uncle Sam manages his toys.

Here’s the oil bath-time of death from Mexican cartoonist, Dario Castillejos.

It isn’t really a bathtub cartoon, but Dutch photo cartoonist Bart van Leeuwen has a similar (but better) take on the same theme as my cartoon, at the beach.

Bart’s magnum opus is this beach cartoon about Trump and his wall. Bart loves the beach.

Now that we ended up at the beach, I think I need another bath. Here’s an old Obama favorite that could work as a Trump cartoon today.

Split Congress and Sinking Oil Prices

Here’s one I drew a week ago that I forgot to post here! The Democrats have the House and the Republicans have the Senate – I look forward to seeing divided government at work again!

I’m impressed by how quickly oil prices are plummeting, and pulling down that stock market. The cartoon below was an oldie that I drew the last time this happened. There isn’t much news that is truly new news. The same old news seems to happen over and over, so sometimes I dust off an appropriate oldie.

This one needed to be in a vertical format, something that makes editorial cartoons sink. Editors like to leave a standard sized wide box as the editorial cartoon hole to fill each day, so deviating from the standard 1.5 wide by 1 tall box means a cartoon doesn’t get much ink.

But, sometimes I need to break out of the box. I hate being stuck in a box!

Sinking Oil Prices Sink Wall Street!

The stock market continued its dive this week. My last cartoon showed the impending doom of the falling Chinese economy, now the falling oil prices are blamed for the latest stock market dump.

I drew this one as a live stream on YouTube and Twitch – want to watch me draw it in real time? Here it is on YouTube …

I’m often asked to show how I color my cartoons, so I did a live stream of coloring this one. Want to watch?  Here it is!

My Recent Mitt Romney Cartoons

I’m having more and more fun drawing Mitt Romney. The grey temples, the perfect hair. Normally, good looking politicians are the worst to draw, and Romney looks like he belongs on “Mad Men”, but I have to admit he’s growing on me.

Here’s Romney at the tattoo parlour…

Obama makes sure that Romney gives us nightmares…

Romney and Obama have much the same style…

My Rising Gas Price Cartoons

With the cost of a gallon of gas inching closer and closer to $4, many economists worry that the pinch people are feeling at the pump will harm our current recovery.

The rising cost of gas is something that happens every year, but it seems to be getting worse. Gas prices have never been higher this time of the year than they are now, and we can expect even sharper increases at the pump because gas typically rises in March and April.

I’ve drawn lots of cartoons over the years about the rising cost of gas. Here are some of my favorites…

Five Cartoons About the Keystone Pipeline

The Obama administration has decided to deny the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline proposal, stating the environmental studies they were requested to make couldn’t be finished in the 60-day deadline imposed by Republicans as part of the payroll tax deal.

Some of our cartoonists have already weighed in on the controversial oil pipeline. Here are five good ones, and after today’s announcement, I’m sure there are many more to come:

Chris Weyant / The Hill
Aislin / Montreal Gazette

Graeme MacKay / Hamilton Spectator (Canada)

Khadafi Needs More Blood

Here’s my new cartoon about Libyan President Moammar Khadafi, who has not stepped-down amid protests for his resignation and turned to violence to defend his power. Fighting so far has claimed over 1,000 lives, and as both sides dig in, it doesn’t seem as though the conflict will end quickly… or with an end to the bloodshed.

We also have a great collection of cartoons about the ongoing crisis in Libya, which you can check out here.
