Trump and Twitter

Here’s my new TwitterTrump with the media.

I searched our database for other “Trump hair on the Twitter bird” cartoons for this blog post just now, and I found this similar Nate Beeler from some months ago.

Ouch! That is pretty similar and Trump looks poised to barf. We’re getting to a saturation point on Trump with Twitter-bird cartoons; there are thousands.  Twitter-bird in Trump’s nesty hair is pretty common, as are Twitter birds pooping on and swarming around Trump in all manner of aggressive scenarios. Just go to PoliticalCartoons.com and search for “Twitter” to see the swarmy swarm.

Caduceus Campfire!

President Trump pulled the funding rug out from under ObamaCare, which may not have been failing before, but is much more likely to fail now. Trump supporters claim that this is to light a fire under Congress to fix the problem – more likely, it will just light a fire under the healthcare system, leaving it scorched – like a marshmallow over the campfire.

I love the caduceus symbol for medicine, with the two snakes and the little wings at the top of a pole – it is a wonderful cartoon cliché that allows me to do healthcare cartoons without words. As healthcare poses existential political issues that divide the Republicans, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to bash the elephants with caduceuses.

Obama took a bite out of the Republicans by pushing ObamaCare through congress without a single Republican vote.

Obama took a moment to gloat.

Republicans can’t agree on healthcare, and likely won’t get anything done, leading Trump to blow the system up. Perhaps congress will be more willing to clean up a big healthcare mess of Trump’s making; they can always blame it on Obama.

More likely, I think healthcare will be the issue that sinks the Republican party.

DACA – Catch!

Is President Trump being clever to throw DACA at congress? It is hard to know, but it certainly makes the Republicans look heartless if they don’t catch those “childhood arrivals.”

I drew this one a couple of days ago. Sorry to be slow. It was fun to see it in today’s USA Today …

It is funny to see the Jeff Parker cartoon at the bottom of USA Today’s Friday round-up. Jeff retired from editorial cartooning to focus on drawing the comic strip “Dustin” with Steve Kelley. (I’m still crying about Jeff’s retirement.) We didn’t have many cartoons about hurricane Irma bearing down on Florida, and Jeff drew lots of hurricane cartoons back in the day, so I dusted off a couple of evergreen Jeff Parker hurricane oldies and reposted them for newspapers on CagleCartoons.com –just what newspapers wanted today.

Jeff remains the king of hurricane cartoons. You can still see Jeff’s archive of oldies, including this cartoon, at: cagle.com/author/jeff-parker/

Trump Kryptonite

There is a lot of Kryptonite around – and Kryptonite is deadly to Superman who runs into the stuff all the time – but Kryptonite never actually kills Superman, who just suffers a bit once in a while from the Kryptonite, then he moves on.

Trump vs. Sessions

President Trump has been bashing Attorney General Jeff Sessions every day on Twitter. It looks like he wants Sessions to quit so that he doesn’t have to suffer the ugly politics of firing him.

My biggest issue was whether to draw any blood with the back-stabbing. I went for no blood. Editors don’t like blood. Now I wish I drew blood.

This is actually the first time I’ve drawn Sessions – and he is fun to draw.

Updated 7/28/17

It turned out that I did draw Sessions before – here:

And here it is in my local Los Angeles Daily News this morning. This is nice to see because it is rare that the Daily News, and it’s Southern California sister papers run an editorial cartoon, except on Sundays. Here’s a wrinkly scan (I spilled ice tea on it – can’t do that with the internet!)  And paired with Charles Krauthammer – yuck.

Kick Me!

Trump, Li’l Kim, Xi and Putin are a funny ensemble. One problem with editorial cartooning is that we can only draw characters that readers already know from the news, and if the cartoonist isn’t a sissy, he or she won’t label the characters but really try to draw caricatures. As the world goes down the tubes we have more characters and more opportunities to eschew labels. Life is good.

This cartoon is based on an oldie I drew about nine years ago, featuring Li’l Kim’s daddy, Li’l Kim Jong Il.

Sorry that I haven’t been drawing or posting much lately. I’ve been holed up in my office doing annual bookkeeping and quarterly artists royalties.  ARRRGH! I have more to do. I’ll try to poke my head out of the muck more often. In the course of all the accounting madness, I neglected to post the grim reaper cartoon below from about three weeks ago when the story of the moment was the GOP’s ugly healthcare bill.

I thought I was being clever at the time – until I saw that dozens of cartoonists were drawing grim reaper cartoons. Great minds think alike.  ARRRGH!

Trump, Climate Change and the World

Here is Trump and the world.

Yes, that is a map of the world on the globe’s head. I always wonder if things like that are clear enough. On the black and white version I put a label on the “World”.

Labels are for sissies, but without the color globe wasn’t clearly a globe.

Hey! It is nice to be back home and drawing cartoons again! More on the way!

Very Clear

I watched Sean Spicer’s White House press conference today. We have a drinking game where I have to take a shot every time Spicer says “very clear.” Ooh. The world is spinning. I can’t keep watching these press conferences.

Trump as Nixon

Here’s my Trump as Nixon!

I just got back from a National Cartoonists Society/USO trip to Bahrain, drawing for the troops. Next week I’m off to Belgium for the Festival in Virton and an exhibition of my work.  Sorry for all the time away. I’ll draw lots of cartoons in June. Really. And I’ll do another blog post about my Bahrain trip.

Of-course, whenever I’m away there is lots of news and I wish I was here drawing cartoons. Trump firing FBI director Comey was big news everywhere and the obvious cartoon to draw was Trump as Nixon, while the pundits on TV were making references to Trump and Nixon’s famous “Saturday Night Massacre” firing the Watergate Special Prosecutor who was investigating Nixon, along with a couple of Attorney Generals. A combo Trump/Nixon was the obvious cartoon to draw and I expected that a lot of other cartoonists would draw the same thing at the same time. It is fun to draw.

One issue we have with “yahtzees” or cartoonists drawing the same obvious image at the same time, is that the cartoon that is obvious to cartoonists typically isn’t obvious to readers or editors – and it is usually the cartoon that editors really want. There’s an old saying among cartoonists, “If one other guy drew it, you’re a plagiarist, if three other guys drew it, you’re a hack, if five other guys drew it, you’re following a great tradition.”

I sketched this one up on the plane back from Bahrain and expected to see some other Nixon/Trumps when I got back to the USA. I wasn’t disappointed. Still, I’ll bet all of these get a good rate of reprinting. Here is how some of my other favorite cartoonists handled their Trump/Nixons. This first one is by Taylor Jones

Here’s one by Jeff Darcy of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer …

This one is by Trevor Irvin from Florida …

The next one is by Rick McKee of the Augusta Chronicle …

This one is by RJ Matson

This one is by Jeff Koterba of the Omaha World-Herald …

Here’s another from Mark Streeter from the Savannah Morning News …

There are lots more Nixon/Trumps on our site and other editorial cartoon sites. Collect them all!

Twitter Poop

President Trump suffers from his impulsive Tweeting. Earlier this week he was accusing President Obama of wire-tapping his phones in a series of tweets that blew back to bite him.

A number of cartoonists have drawn the twitter bird flying over and pooping on Trump. I thought a giant Twitter bird would be funny, because it would poop more. And trump is one of those rare characters tho is recognizable even with his face covered in bird poop.

I didn’t live-stream this drawing, but I colored it, along with the last cartoon, in the video below. Come watch!
