Dr. Fauci – Part 2

This is part two of our collection of the best cartoons about Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Trump’s expert on infectious diseases who has become a familiar face and cartoon character. Gotta love the doc.  Don’t miss Dr Fauci PART 1.

This is a very difficult time for journalism as newspapers and news sites are losing their advertisers, who are shuttered during the pandemic. It is the same with Cagle Cartoons, as our newspaper clients are getting later and later in paying their bills, making cash flow difficult for us as well.

The pandemic may be the end for many of the newspapers that support our profession, but we can survive with your help. If you are a Cagle.com fan, please make a small contribution to support the cartoons.

Dr. Fauci – Part 1

Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Trump’s expert on infectious diseases, has become a familiar face at the frequent, White House coronavirus news conferences –however he seems to be appearing less and less at these events as scientists don’t seem very comfortable working alongside the president. Fauci is an omnipresent TV presence and, more and more, a cartoon character.  Here is part one of two collections of the best of our Dr. Fauci cartoons. Be sure to visit Dr Fauci PART 2.

Trump and Disinfectant PART 1

Last Thursday America was fascinated to see President Trump pushing one of his medical experts to conduct research on crazy and harmful proposed cures for COVID-19, including drinking or injecting toxic disinfectants and shining light inside the body. I got emails from quacks pushing bleach pills soon after Trumps spectacle. This scary nonsense led to lots of cartoons –see the best of the batch below, with a second installment tomorrow as these cartoons are still coming in.

Support from our fans can make the all the difference as the pandemic/newspaper-crash threatens to kill our profession. Editorial cartoons are an important part of journalism and the world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes. Thanks for your generosity! We need you now!

Trump Giddyap

My new Trump emergency cartoon is inspired by the pushmi-pullyu  character from Doctor Dolittle and is something of a cartoon trope. Cartoonists have all drawn this kind of thing before. Still, it is fun to have the Jack-ass be an ass.

Not much different from an old Nickelodeon show I liked, CatDog. I drew CatDog way back in 2002 when HP merged with Compaq.

Things don’t change much.

TRUE Crazy Stuff 3!

Most of this new batch of my old TRUE panels came from my collection about entertainment and celebrities. I ended up killing most of these cartoons because they were so stale. I forget how different things were back in 1995. This edited batch of cartoons makes 1995 seem not so different from today – even though one cartoons shows a guy reading a book on the toilet; we may not read books anymore, but toilets haven’t changed much.

Star Trek is still familiar 23 years later. Mattel’s Barbie is still popular, but other toys in my TRUE cartoons are forgotten – for example Barney the Dinosaur was big in 1995. I forgot all about Barney. The first cartoon below is about Lassie, who we remembered as a doggie celebrity back in 1995. Do people remember Lassie now?

Carly Fiorina’s Eye Test

Carly Fiorina insists that Democrats should look at the Planned Parenthood gotcha tapes to see the images of a “fully formed fetus, its legs kicking, as someone says “we have to keep it aline to harvest its brian.” Trouble is, no such video exists. Florin says that is just a “technicality.” And, considering that most of what Planned Parenthood does is health services unrelated to abortion, I thought I would draw Fiorina getting a Planned Parenthood eye test – there’s no way to know what she will see.

Frankly, the Planned Parenthood tapes seem to me to be nothing more than meat for the Republican wolves, without any real substance. I would like to see Planned Parenthood, and all abortion providers, give tissue samples (or as Fiorina would say, living, kicking, cute. little human babies) to researchers – if it was up to me, I’d require them to do so, and to conduct the abortions in such a way as to make those samples more viable for research as they are now prohibited from doing, and I’d have them charge for it. Why don’t we hear calls for requiring all abortion providers to do what Planned Parenthood does on these tapes?

How I Got My Marijuana License

Here’s my non-fiction, autobiographical cartoon about my recently getting my California Marijuana license!

152402 600 How I Got My Marijuana License cartoons

My local altie newspaper, the Santa Barbara Independent, printed this on the back page of their current issue – there it is below.  I thought it looked pretty good.  The colors always darken up in print, so I try to use light, fruity colors in my cartoons; they hold up better.

And look how cool my autobiographical marijuana license cartoon is in Spanish!

More of My Sketches

Readers seem to like it when I post my rough sketches, so here we go again, with my sketches for my last couple of cartoons.  The first one is the Obama Healthcare Caduceus.  I do the rough sketch in hard pencil on slick paper, so I’m not tempted to do details and render.

Then I trace over the sketch on drafting vellum, with a hard pencil that I scan to look like ink and save as a bitmap file for black and white printing.  The image below is what most readers see in the newspaper.

Then I add the color in Photoshop.  I use rather unsophisticated colors because newspaper printing is lousy, and if I use anything that isn’t pastel and bright I get complaints from editors.

Here’s the sketch for another health care cartoon.  Same thing here, hard pencil on slick paper.

I did the same thing with the pencil on vellum, but this time I just added a bit of gray tone to the drawing because I wasn’t quite inspired to color this one.
