Trump Toilet

Trump isn’t showing much respect to Congress these days. The president will not comply with any subpoenas from the House committees that are investigating him and the courts can’t do much about it because Trump’s term will be over by the time the courts come to any decisions. My cartoon shows Trump’s attitude about Congress.

This isn’t the first time I’ve drawn Trump on the toilet –here’s an oldie from a couple of years ago when it looked like Trump was spinning out and sinking with some forgettable issue of the moment.

Somehow I think Trump will have more visits to the cartoon toilet before long.

TRUE Crazy Stuff 4!

Here’s a new batch of my old TRUE cartoons. This first one is a self-portrait of younger me, sitting on the toilet, talking on my land-line rotary phone. Looking at the old True cartoons makes me feel young again, until I notice details that make me feel old.

TRUE Crazy Stuff 3!

Most of this new batch of my old TRUE panels came from my collection about entertainment and celebrities. I ended up killing most of these cartoons because they were so stale. I forget how different things were back in 1995. This edited batch of cartoons makes 1995 seem not so different from today – even though one cartoons shows a guy reading a book on the toilet; we may not read books anymore, but toilets haven’t changed much.

Star Trek is still familiar 23 years later. Mattel’s Barbie is still popular, but other toys in my TRUE cartoons are forgotten – for example Barney the Dinosaur was big in 1995. I forgot all about Barney. The first cartoon below is about Lassie, who we remembered as a doggie celebrity back in 1995. Do people remember Lassie now?

Trump in the Toilet

Trump looks like he is spinning down the tubes. I wasn’t sure that this cartoon would work, since it is rather odd, and there may not be room for his body under his head in the toilet … but maybe there is. I think the fun part of this is the swirl of hair at the top.

Last week when I was at the big editorial cartooning festival in St Just le Martel, France, I was in a “cartoon fight” against a Romanian cartoonist named “Clear,” who wore his vampire cape. They built a boxing ring and had big easels for us. The theme was Trump and I drew The Donald grabbing the Statue of Liberty’s “pussy” – an image I was sure would be the Yahtzee of the week. I think the nicest Liberty-“pussy” cartoon is this one at the right by Alen Lauzan from Chile.

I’ll post more on the convention in France soon! And when I get over the euro-cold I brought back with me I’ll start live-streaming cartoons again – stay tuned.

Our Proud Olympic Swimmers

I remember the jocks back in high school were a bunch of arrogant jerks, so the behavior of the American Olympic swimmers is no surprise to me. No one should look to self-entitled athletes as representative of their countries, unless we look to them as representative of the biggest jerks in their countries.

The epidemic of bad behavior among athletes is on ugly display in sex scandals at colleges across the USA, which led yesterday to the interesting resignation of Ken Starr, the former president of Baylor University where he oversaw a coverup of Baylor’s football players’ sexual assaults. Remember Ken Starr? He was the sanctimonious independent prosecutor in charge of the “vast right-wing conspiracy” to bring down Bill Clinton in the 1990’s. What goes around comes around, huh? Irony is a bitch.

Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and a security guard. (Notice how the swimmers naturally seek out the water.)

My cartoon is based on early news reports that described the drunken athletes breaking a door at a gas station where they stopped to go to the bathroom. More recent reports describe the swimmers peeing on the gas station building because it had no bathroom, with Lochte tearing a framed advertisement off of the building’s wall rather than breaking a door. I suppose my cartoon could be criticized as “inaccurate” but I still think it captures the gist of the event.

This swimmers scandal has stolen the oxygen from the rest of the Olympics and it has given American cartoonists a welcome respite from our toxic presidential campaign. Here are a couple of my favorite swimmer-jerk cartoons:

This one is by Sean Delonas, the long-time cartoonist for The New York Post who has started up drawing again for Cagle Cartoons. The chickens make me laugh.

This Steve Sack “dope” cartoon sums it all up.

Sometime I think that, if not for Pinocchio, there would only be half as many editorial cartoons. This one is by Dave Granlund.

Watch me draw my cartoon in real time on YouTube below!

Now, watch me color the cartoon on Photoshop!

Who is to Blame for Flint’s Poisoned Water?

I enjoyed drawing this Flint Michigan cartoon on Twitch. Take a look at the video below where I explain about the cartoon and answer plenty of questions.

Who is to blame? The Republican, Rick Snyder administration in Michigan wants to shift the blame to the EPA and Obama administration, and it looks like the EPA fell plenty short on this one, but I lay the blame on the Michigan governor and the lousy, unelected administrator he appointed to make all of the bad decisions in Flint.

Sit back and spend the afternoon watching me draw this in real time in the videos below!

And here’s part two …

Egypt, Obama, Putin, Detroit and Nashville!

Here I sit in my new Nashville, Tennessee apartment, trying out a new restaurant for every meal, and finally drawing cartoons.  I finished my second cartoon in Nashville today – a busy, crowd scene cartoon about Obama and foreign aid to Egypt.  Here is my rough pencil sketch.
EgyptAidSketch600 Egypt, Obama, Putin, Detroit and Nashville! cartoons

I drew this first with a light, hard, #5 pencil to get the people in the crowd into the right composition, so they are interacting with each other, have expressive body language, their faces aren’t obscured, the feet and arms are on right … all those details need to be thought through for each figure; better to do it in a sketch than on the fly in in finished art.   The line art is below.  I debated whether to go with just line for the black and white version that most people see in the newspaper.

Here is the gray-scale version.  I thought it read a bit better with tone.  I do the gray-scale separately.  It isn’t just a gray version of the color cartoon.

I usually avoid doing crowd scenes.  When I was an illustrator, I used to do a lot of crowd scenes.  I think art directors would sit in a brainstorming meeting and come up with a list of too many things that they needed to put in an ad – so they would call a cartoonist to jam it all into one piece of art.  Cartoonists get these jobs because the lists are too long, so the art has to be crazy. In fact, crowd scenes are usually not very effective compositions.  The most effective compositions show powerful character and expression, which is better done with large figures and faces.  With too many little figures in a crowd, the power of the expressions and body language are lost to tiny details.  That said, I hate to admit that sometimes a concept calls for a crowd scene.

Here’s the color cartoon …

This one suffers from low resolution on the web, and will look much better in print, with crisp lines and texture in the tiny characters.  Here is a detail.

One funny thing about cartoon crowd scenes; when readers send me unsolicited ideas for cartoons, the ideas are almost always for crowd scenes.  The reader wants to say so much in his cartoon idea, that he comes up with a list of junk to include, just like the sloppy advertising art directors.  Some ideas I get start with, “draw an army on the left, and another army on the right …” or the reader will write, “fill the sky with helicopters …” Not only am I too lazy for this, all the tiny details would be ineffective in the composition, and the cartoon would be lousy.  For people who think in words, not images, these list-cartoons make perfect sense; to cartoonists, they are nonsense.

The previous cartoon is another Egypt/Arab Spring drawing.  Here’s the rough pencil sketch.  Notice that I drew Obama too low and made a note to move him up.  I make lots of mistakes.  Mistakes are easy to fix.  Better to make lots of mistakes and have no fear of mistakes – at least in cartoons.  I wouldn’t give that advice to my dentist.

Here is the line art version that most people will see in the newspapers.  No gray version for this one.  I like to keep them as line art if possible – there is something more elegant about not having to rely on tone.

And here is the color …

136415 600 Egypt, Obama, Putin, Detroit and Nashville! cartoons

This cartoon is similar to one I drew a week earlier, with Obama and the Republicans.  I like the yellow ochre texture background for dirty fighting scenes.

Obama doesn’t actually wear pinstripe suits.  He wears plain black and blue suits, which are no fun to draw.  So I take some artistic license.  This recent Detroit-in-the-toilet cartoon also uses the yellow ochre, grungy theme that I’m fond of right now.

Another recent one I neglected to post is this one about the chilly relations with Russia – not much of a cartoon, just an illustration of chilly relations.

Sorry, with the move to Nashville I’ve fallen behind.  I’ll catch up soon.

Nashville is starting to grow on me.  I’ll get used to it soon – when it cools off and the humidity goes down.
