The Most Popular Cartoons of the Month, May 2020

Here are the most popular cartoons of the month of May, 2020. Regular readers of my blog and newsletter will have seen all of these cartoons in our weekly roundups of the Top Ten Most Popular cartoons. Our Top Ten is a measure of how many of our subscribing newspaper editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 63 cartoonists in our syndication package. The list clearly shows that newspaper editors have been looking for cartoons about the lighter side of the pandemic.

I’d like to keep these lists to only ten cartoons, but this month we had a three way tie for the 10th place cartoon so there are 12 cartoons on the list. Out of the top 12, a whopping five cartoons are by Jeff Koterba of The Omaha World-Herald (Jeff sneaked two of those into the tie for 10th place). The #1 cartoon is by Steve Sack of The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. I had two cartoons on the list myself. Congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this month, RJ Matson, Nate Beeler, Dave Granlund and Randy Enos.

20% of the cartoonists get 80% of the sales and reprints, and most of the cartoonists never make it into the Top Ten.  If you don’t like the Top Ten, take it up with your local newspaper editor. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

Most Popular Cartoons of the Week!

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (May 2 -May 9).

The big winners this week are Jeff Koterba of The Omaha World Herald and Canadian cartoon maestro, Dave Whamond, each with three cartoons in the top ten. These are the cartoons that are chosen by most newspapers editors to be reprinted on their editorial pages. If you don’t like the top ten, take it up with your local newspaper editor. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

The most third most popular is my own graduation cartoon. I haven’t been drawing many cartoons lately as I’ve been spending most of my time on business stuff, keeping things going with all the pandemic chaos going on and a surge in hacker attacks. I know I should pick up the pace. See the Daryl Cagle cartoon archive on Cagle.com.

#4

We have a tie for the fourth most popular cartoon, here’s Dave Granlund.

#4

The other cartoon in a fourth place tie is this one from Jeff Koterba.

Coronavirus Graduation

Here’s my new cartoon, on graduation with social distancing. The scene of a graduation with masks and grads, standing on the lawn, at least six feet apart, amused me, but what’s really happening is the graduation ceremonies are being cancelled, which isn’t so funny.

Drawing this made my mind wander back to past graduation cartoons.  This graduate lemmings cartoon harkens back to 2008 when there were no jobs for grads. It would be just as true today, if the grads were sitting at home watching TV and falling off a cliff, but I can’t think of how to draw that.

This old student debt cartoon seems to still be good year after year, and seems to be a yahtzee.

Here’s an old TRUE! graduation cartoon that I drew 25 years ago.

The TrumpCare Cliff

I love those little lemmings who all commit mass-suicide by leaping off of cliffs in the Arctic. The lemmings metaphor is a standard for editorial cartoonists and I’ve drawn them a few times myself. Here is today’s cartoon with the Republican elephants running off of the TrumpCare cliff.

Gotta love those lemmings. Here’s one I drew for the “Arab Spring” revolution in Egypt …

Seven years ago when congress was debating ObamaCare, I drew this Democrat lemmings cartoon …

This is one of my most popular and most plagiarized cartoons, about graduate lemmings and unemployment …

I drew these lemmings in 2007 when we had the mortgage and housing collapse …

I’m sure I’ll be drawing plenty more lemmings during the Trump administration. Want to see me draw the new TrumpCare lemmings cartoon in real time? Watch the video below. You can watch it at 1.5 speed which makes it 150% more interesting!

And here is the video of my coloring the GOP lemmings cartoon in Photoshop on my Wacom Cintiq …

Lemmings!

Lemmings jumping en-masse off of a cliff are one of the great chichés that editorial cartoonists rely upon – like the Iwo Jima memorial, clown cars, the Statue of Liberty, movie posters, peeing dogs – it is no surprise to see a new lemming/cliff cartoon and it is fun to see the familiar metaphor with a new twist.  I end up doing a new lemming cartoon once every two or three years.

My lemming cartoon yesterday was about the ongoing tumult in Egypt, and protesting Egyptians running their country off of a cliff.

126311 600 Lemmings! cartoons

Back in 2009, during the Obamacare debate, I drew the Democrat/lemmings jumping off of a political cliff. Of-course, their cliff was on the left.

69009 600 Lemmings! cartoons

Back in 2007 at the onset of the mortgage collapse, I drew house/lemmings jumping off of a cliff …

40973 600 Lemmings! cartoons

Way back in 2003 unemployment was on our minds (things never change much) and I drew this graduation lemmings cartoon.

64336 600 Lemmings! cartoons

The lemming metaphor is popular around the world too.  Here is how my graduation cartoon was plagiarized by a cartoonist at a top newspaper in Saudi Arabia.

SaudiPlagiarizedcartoon Lemmings! cartoons

It amuses me to see how the positions of all of the characters in the Saudi cartoon match my own drawing.

Here are some lemmings by some of my favorite cartoonists.  This one is by Mike Keefe from back in 2007 …

36065 600 Lemmings! cartoons

Here’s Colombian cartoonist “Matador” (Killer) with the Eurozone countries as lemmings.

102699 600 Lemmings! cartoons

Joe Heller did the lemmings as a Martin Luther King Day cartoon …

88061 600 Lemmings! cartoons

This lemming/shoppers cartoon by Andy Singer made me laugh …

71378 600 Lemmings! cartoons

This mortgage crisis cartoon that I drew back in 2007 is a twist on the lemmings …

44708 600 Lemmings! cartoons

I did a search on the word “cliff” in our cartoon database and came up with 440 results.  Yipes!  There are cliffs everywhere!
