Thinking of Michael Flynn

I get a cable TV channel that lets me see a view of four news networks at once and I regularly switch back and forth between CNN, BBC, MSNBC and Fox News – and Fox News is a completely different world, especially the past couple of days as they have obsessed over the Michael Flynn story while other news focuses almost exclusively on the pandemic.

One thing I wanted to do in the cartoon was to draw the screaming Democrat donkey with a mask, and the daydreaming, pandemic-disinterested Republican with no mask. It occurred to me – what if I wanted to draw the elephant with a mask; how would I do that? A mask is supposed to cover your nose. Would the elephant have a mask the size of a bed sheet? Would his mask have a hose-like extension for his trunk? If I drew anything like that, would it even look like a mask?

These are important questions for Republicans, but only if they are going to wear masks. Wearing a mask is effective in protecting others, not yourself, so it makes ideological sense why Republicans would not want to wear them … still, if MAGA Republicans did want to wear them, I’d be in cartoon trouble.

Here is the rough sketch for this one, that I drew on a piece of Cagle Cartoons letterhead.

Notice that I thought about drawing the elephant in a Fox News t-shirt, but I decided against it. FoxNews.com used to be a great subscriber to CagleCartoons, but they recently cancelled their subscription. That’s very disappointing and a giant step in their descent into hell.

This post got me to thinking, so I drew this …

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

I vote for NO WITNESSES!

On Friday the Senate is expected to vote on whether to call witnesses for the impeachment trial. As of now, it is possible that four Republicans can be found to vote for witnesses, in particular, John Bolton –but it is likely there will not be four Republicans who vote for witnesses. Here’s my cartoon …

I was reminded that people like to see my rough sketches, so here you go.

You can see I fiddled with making the elephant’s butt bigger and moving his head forward, and whether or not to put the tie in front of his shoe. This is an odd angle to draw, but it is the best angle for effective mooning –I’ve done it before. Here’s one that I drew over 20 years ago, during the Florida recount in the Bush vs. Gore election.

My biggest regret from my career as an editorial cartoonist is that I supported the run-up to the war in Iraq, and I believed The New York Times‘ bogus stories about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. (I won’t make the mistake of trusting The New York Times again.) Here’s one of my run-up to war in Iraq cartoons, about Saddam obstructing the weapons inspectors in Iraq –we later learned that what Saddam was hiding was his fragile ego, since he had no such weapons.

I think it is a general rule for editorial cartoonists that whenever there is a good excuse to draw a butt, a dog or a Statue of Liberty, you gotta grab it and run.

Michael Flynn – Ready to Flip!

The pundits say that cues from former National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn’s lawyers tell them that he is ready to “flip” and testify against someone higher up – presumably President Trump. Flynn has been under a lot of heat –or as I draw it, on top of a lot of heat, from special prosecutor Robert Mueller.

Flynn is a wonderful character. His harsh face seems to perfectly describe his harsh character. Sometime you can tell a book by its cover. Here are a couple of Flynn cartoons from my archives. I drew the first one when Flynn “resigned.”

Flynn is an albatross around Trump’s neck.

Flynn the Albatross

Here’s Trump with Michael Flynn as an albatross around his neck.

This is one of those cartoons that will make kids ask, “What does your cartoon MEAN?” The “albatross around the neck” expression is probably meaningless to them, and they won’t know the news about former National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn taking big payments from Russia and Turkey, and not reporting them as the law requires. Usually kids don’t “get” cartoons because they don’t follow the news and don’t know the characters.

Flynn is a wonderful cartoon character and I suppose it is nice to see him not entirely disappear. His face is the natural face of an albatross. I drew Flynn a couple of times recently as he was being fired. See them below. We have lots of Flynn cartoons on Cagle.com – come take a look!

Russian Tic-Tac-Toe

It looks like Jeff Sessions is the next in line to be brought down by a fishy relationship with Russia.

All three of these guys are easy to draw, and in that respect, I hate to see them go. Paul Manafort was Trump’s campaign manager, Michael Flynn was the National Sercurity Advisor, and Jeff Sessions is the Attorney General who just recused himself from an investigation which may or may not exist.

What is it with Trump and Russia? I could ask, what is it with cartoonists and those Russian nesting-dolls – is it possible to have any more nesting-doll cartoons? Sadly, I think we’re facing a bleak future of many more nesting-dolls cartoons. I haven’t drawn one yet, but I think everyone else has. Here are a few recent ones. Maybe we’ll see more nesting dolls than Pinocchios … someday … I can only dream.

Flynn Gets the Boot!

President Trump asked for the resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn who then “quit”.

Somehow I think I’ll be drawing lots of cartoons about Trump, with a Russian theme.

Watch me draw this one in real time, in the video below. Note that I had no idea what I was doing when I started and I quit and started over a couple of time. I understand why more cartoonists don’t do live-streaming. Perhaps we should see how the cartoon sausage is made.

In the next video I color the cartoon in Photoshop …
