The Best of Roger Stone

News that comes out on Fridays push editorial cartoons into the next week as cartoonists and editors have already planned ahead for the weekend –that’s how it is with the indictment of Roger Stone last Friday. I’m sure we’ll see more Roger Stone cartoons trickle in this week. Here’s my Stone toon and some of my Roger Stone favorites …

I love this Taylor Jones cartoon –and so does Roger Stone, who licensed it from us to run in his recent book.

This Stone keystone is by my buddy, Rick McKee of the Augusta Chronicle …

Here are a couple from our new, photo-realist cartoonist, Bart van Leeuwen

This one is from John Cole

This is from Adam Zyglis

Democrat Guernica

There is horror and anguish in the ranks of the Democratic Party these days. Pablo Picasso’s Guernica is probably the best known visual icon for horror and anguish.

Here’s a detail …

democratguernicadetail

Eight years ago I drew a similar cartoon when Democrats won the presidency and congress – to the horror of Republicans.

I’ve had the GOP version up as the top image on my Facebook page for years, And I’ve gotten lots of complaints about it, usually from very literal conservatives who write things like, “Guernica is about the Spanish civil war – it has nothing to do with Republicans!” I also got lots of criticism from conservatives who wanted to point out that I’m not as good an artist as Pablo Picasso. Here’s an image of the real “Guernica.”

This David Fitzsimmons oldie about George W. Bush painting Iraq is a nice one.

Worldwide cartoonists like to use flags in their cartoons – the problem is that the American audience doesn’t know their flags. Here’s our Greek cartoonist, Michael Kountouris drawing a combination of the Syrian flag and Guernica.

Here’s my Cuban cartoonist friend in Mexico, Angel Boligan, with Violence in Video Games …

Here’s another nice one from Boligan, simply titled, “Insurance.”

Gotta love Guernica.

Go Vote!

Here’s a generic, voting day cartoon. I know the other cartoonists are in a fever pitch over the last days of the campaign season – but I’m weary of it. The Trump name-calling cartoons continue to flood in with Hillary bashing taking a back seat. I’m looking forward to a time when there are more topics for cartoonists who might chime in with different opinions.

And I miss my donkeys and elephants. Since the Republicans have fractured, and an anti-Trump cartoon isn’t necessarily anti-Republican or anti-conservative, the poor elephant has suffered from a lack of clear direction. I miss my single minded elephant.

Videos will come back. I promise.

Voodoo Hillary!

With all the news last week about Hillary’s health reinforcing the alt-right narrative about Hillary being sick and secretive, I got to thinking about how Donald Trump might be spending his play time.

I wanted to make Trump look like a little kid, delighted with his toy, as he inflicts dark magical, medical horrors upon Hillary. Want to see me drawing this one in real time? Check it out in the video below.

See me color this one in the video below!

Trump and Hitler-Hillary!

When I was drawing this Trump – Hillary/Hitler cartoon I was thinking it was pretty silly, but looking at Trumps recent comments about Hillary the bigot, it isn’t too hard to get to the bottom of Godwin’s Law and jump straight to Hitler. That’s Hillary’s official State Department photo from when she was Secretary of State, with her hair made a little but blonder, and blacker.

I recently wrote a column noting how so many cartoonists have been drawing Trump as Hitler. I guess it was time for me to jump on the Hitler bandwagon. I love drawing Trump, but I haven’t quite found the shorthand caricature of Trump that I’m happy with and I struggled a bit before deciding on this face. I’ll get used to Trump before long. Or maybe not.

I had some tech problems with the video of my drawing this one – but I have the coloring video! Take a look below and check out all the cartoons and videos in my archive at DarylCagle.com.

Off the Record TRUMP DISASTER and Cavemen Cartoonists

Today’s cartoon isn’t really an exaggeration – this is what “on-the-record” and “off-the-record” interviews with GOP politicians are really like these days. Sometimes a cartoon is nothing but a slice of life.

I’m setting up my studio again in Los Angeles after my move back from Nashville and I’ll hopefully be drawing more cartoons! This is the first one I’ve live-streamed from my new setup. There are too many things to remember with the streaming; with this one, I forgot the little sandpaper that I like to have on the side as I draw, to make the chisel points on my pencils – so I went outside and grabbed a couple of rocks. I can draw with rocks instead of sandpaper, just like the caveman editorial cartoonists used to do, back in the days of newspapers and dinosaurs as I saw depicted on my recent visit to the Creation Museum in Kentucky, where they recently opened a $100 million full size replica of Noah’s Ark, funded by taxpayers. The project is supported by $60 million in tax-free municipal bonds and ongoing tax support from a sales tax rebate and a tax on wages of all the employees who work for businesses in the Ark’s tax district, along with an $18 million tax rebate from the Kentucky Tourism Development Finance Authority. Here’s a nice article about it.

Gotta love Kentucky. The video below shows me drawing the “Off the Record” cartoon, rocks and all.  Thank God.

In the next video I color the cartoon, like a modern cartoonist on my Wacom Cintiq.

Trump and Hillary Tell Each Other Where to Go

180180_600Trump is crazy, Hillary belongs in jail – that’s all we need for a presidential debate.

I wrote a little “thank you” to my cartoonist buddy Marian Kaminsky in Vienna because his cartoon at the right got me to thinking I wanted to draw much the same thing, but stage it differently. Marian called this one, “ONLY THIS OPTION CAN SAVE AMERICA.” hmm.

Want to see me drawing this one in real time? Check out the video below. Try watching it a double speed – that makes me look like a genius.

The next video shows me coloring this one in Photoshop on the Wacom Cintiq while I chat with people on Twitch.tv/darylcagle …

Editors Who Insist That We Edit First

I’m just now getting back to work after a lovely NCS Reuben Awards weekend and some bleary-eyed days of bookkeeping. While I was away, our cartoonist, Randy Enos, drew this Trump cartoon that made editors angry – they insisted we should have never posted it. Even though the editors print only a select few cartoons in our CagleCartoons.com package that we post for syndication, they often object to being exposed to cartoon choices that they find objectionable. This one made some vocal editors angry.

I also get mail from readers who wonder why we don’t post pro-Trump cartoons. The answer is: we don’t have any pro-Trump cartoons. I don’t know any cartoonists are are pro-Trump.

Democrats’ Hearts and Minds

It is interesting to see the Democratic primary race heating up after Hillary Clinton has clinched the nomination. Hillary doesn’t seem to inspire passion among her supporters as both Bernie and Trump do.

This was a tricky one to draw, since I wanted Hillary’s and Bernie’s heads to be big enough to work in a simple layout. Bernie the heart threatens to be more of a digestive tract. Hillary should be right behind the donkey eyeballs … so … compromise – isn’t that what politics is all about? Watch me draw this one in real time in the video below.

Cruz and Kasich Team Up to Topple Trump

Cruz and Kasich have decided not to compete against each other so that they don’t split up the “stop-Trump” vote in the remaining states.

I think Trump gets a spray tan, and covers his eyes, making for little white areas around his eyes. I suppose he could have a farmers tan and wears sunglasses when he’s outside, but I lean towards the spray tan theory. I’ve gotten criticized by some readers who complain that I don’t draw Trump flesh tone orange enough. In fact, I’ve been using the same old flesh tone for Trump that I have been using for other characters in the cartoons. With this cartoon I made a change to Trump’s flesh tone.  Should I stick with it? Is he orange enough? Should I go back to flesh tone normalcy with Trump?

Check out the video below to watch me draw this cartoon in real time.

in the next video I color the cartoon in Photoshop.
