Inmate Netanyahu

With all the news happening, international stories that would normally get some attention are buried. I even forgot to post this cartoon that I drew more than a week ago.

Israel’s president is facing a big bribery scandal that could send him to jail. It is interesting how little ink this story is getting.

I first drew this with Netanyahu wearing the cartoon classic striped prison suit, without thinking. Here’s some advice for cartoonists: don’t draw Israelis in prison garb that looks like concentration camp suits, even though orange prison suits don’t convert well to black and white.  Sometimes cartoon clichés are best ignored.

Russian Tic-Tac-Toe

It looks like Jeff Sessions is the next in line to be brought down by a fishy relationship with Russia.

All three of these guys are easy to draw, and in that respect, I hate to see them go. Paul Manafort was Trump’s campaign manager, Michael Flynn was the National Sercurity Advisor, and Jeff Sessions is the Attorney General who just recused himself from an investigation which may or may not exist.

What is it with Trump and Russia? I could ask, what is it with cartoonists and those Russian nesting-dolls – is it possible to have any more nesting-doll cartoons? Sadly, I think we’re facing a bleak future of many more nesting-dolls cartoons. I haven’t drawn one yet, but I think everyone else has. Here are a few recent ones. Maybe we’ll see more nesting dolls than Pinocchios … someday … I can only dream.

E-mail Ouch!

FBI Director Comey threw an ugly curveball at Hillary last week when he re-opened the investigation into her e-mails. I love to draw people throwing ugly curveballs.

Yes, I know I should have done a live-stream video of this one. I’ve been taking a bit of a cold-infused vacation from my video regimen. I’ll start up again soon. Really.

I drew another cartoon about the Russians and Wikileaks that I didn’t color because the Comey investigation news came out as I was starting to color the cartoon; I thought the new story drowned Wikileaks out. Here’s my Russian general that, I would guess, few readers will see.

The Clinton Foundation

Now, as I’m looking at this “Clinton Foundation” cartoon I notice that I signed it TWICE as “DarylCagle.com”. That’s a ridiculous mistake that I’ve never made before.

There have been quite a few “crumbling foundation” cartoons about Hillary – I’m just another dog in the pack – except I’ve got TWO signatures. Try to beat THAT.

Here you can see me drawing this one, with my 4H pencils on Seth-Cole Dura-Lene paper. Really. It is pencil. Really.

And here I color it in Photoshop on my Wacom Cintiq.

Hillary and Trump – @#%$!!

I almost didn’t draw this cartoon, because Hillary and Trump would never wear t-shirts and it just looked wrong – but then I got the idea of having them wear the t-shirts on top of their pant-suit and suit-suit, and that struck me as funny!

I also struggled with Hillary’s face in this one, as you can see in the video below. That’s the problem with these videos; all my struggles are on full display. The magic is gone.

In the next video I clean up my messy drawing and color it in Photoshop with my Wacom Cintiq.

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz Gets the Boot

I’m not too happy with my Putin and Bernie in this one, but Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is great fun to draw. Her hair is fun. Somehow I’m guessing she’s be around for a while in one way or another.

Here I am drawing this one live (as of 1:00pm Pacific Time Tuesday, this had another hour to finish uploading – come back later if you are early!)

And here I color it in real time …

Bernie Pulls Ahead of Hillary in the Presidential Race

This cartoon is a collection of clichés, and it marks the first time I’ve drawn Bernie Sanders. I enjoy Bernie and I hope he can keep up the pace. Both Bernie and Hillary are wonderful cartoon characters, as are Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. The pundits have it all wrong, this year Americans are voting for the best cartoon candidates.

I’ll keep drawing my cartoons in live streams and I hope we’ll get more people joining in and chatting while I’m online. Watch me draw this cartoon in real time in the video below!

Those Little Republican Piggies!

“This Little Piggy” is an editorial cartooning standard. Here it is with the Republican candidates as toes …

I drew this one live online. I’m going to try to do this with all of my cartoons going forward – it is a brave new day! Check out the video of my drawing session and come join me next time and I’ll chat with you while I draw!

El Diablo Volkswagen

Here’s my Volkswagen cartoon – this is a simple “name-calling” cartoon; editorial cartooning in its purest form.

I thought about making a Volkswagen car into a devil, but I didn’t think that would be too easy to read, so I went with the logo, which is a little strange looking, but what the hell. And I included lots of hellish smoke. I notice the Yahtzee cartoon for this issue is a Volkswagen logo obscured with smoke, or with a little exhaust pipe and smoke.

My favorite so far is from Danish cartoonist Herbjorn Skogstad, who drew a guy doing a giant Volkswagen fart. I think it is the duty of editorial cartoonists to draw farts, poop, dogs and Statues of Liberty at every opportunity.

Hillary and the Email Storm

Hillary is a gift to cartoonists. The fact that she is humorless makes her all the more fun.

International cartoonists make a lot of use of the “@” sign to represent email in their wordless cartoons, something that is not seen so often in American cartoons. (They also go crazy with UPC codes in their cartoons, representing commerce or general, modern commerce.) Wordy American cartoonists could do with fewer words.

Most newspapers print my cartoons in black and white. The black and white version below is just line art, which I think is more elegant, but I find that newspapers prefer to take my color cartoons and grayscale them rather than use the more simple and elegant line art. In this case, that will give them more emails, I suppose.

I drew a similar, symbolic Hillary/email cartoon some months ago, with the “@” symbol as a ball and chain. Some readers didn’t get this one – maybe because the “@” needs a gap at the end of the curl, maybe because the idea of an “@” as email is just too obscure, and “@” rain will go over their heads too. I’ll find out soon enough.
