In the Trump Shadow

Donald Trump casts a big shadow over the Republican field as we approach the first debate. I drew little caricatures of all the candidates – can you name them all? (I would have missed Jim Gilmore – he declared late and I stuck him behind the crowd, behind Ben Carson, as an afterthought.)

I started off drawing this one with Donald Trump as a storm cloud raining on the other Republicans.

When I posted this we started getting calls from editors who wanted a color version, and I haven’t done that yet. I suppose I still should, but I think the shadow version is better.

I’m guessing that the Fox News debate will be either storm or shadow, with Trump on top. We’ll see.

Donald Trump Tongue Noose

Today on CNN there is a constant barrage of Trump-bashing in response to Trump’s John McCain-bashing. The TV pundits seem sure that Trump’s words have doomed his presidential campaign; I’m not so sure, and as a cartoonist I enjoy having Trump around.

Metamorphosis!

Richard Nixon is great fun to draw.  It would have been wonderful to work as an editorial cartoonist during the Watergate days.  It was an editorial cartooning renaissance.

This week, the pack of cartoonists all ran in the direction of comparing Barack Obama with Richard Nixon because of Obama’s worsening three scandals: the AP records seizure, Benghazi and the IRS.  I draw metamorphosis cartoons every so often, when the news seems to be calling out for them.  Here is the line art for Obama turning into Nixon, which most readers will see in newspapers that print in black and white.

Here’s the color version.

Just after the presidential election, the folks at Fox News were apoplectic about their loss, and ranted that Obama would be free to be the wild, radical leftist they knew he was all along, now that he was freed from the constraints of needing to be re-elected.  So I drew this metamorphosis cartoon.

And I drew this one when Disney bought Marvel Comics.

Cartoonists draw evolution themed cartoons all the time – which are pretty similar to metamorphosis, I guess.  Here is Mitt Romney, and his evolving views about evolution, from back in 2007.

Here’s an evolving Donald Trump from 2011.

Cartooning, evolution and metamorphosis! It’s a tradition!  I’m working on another one today.

Welcome Steve Sack!

I’m happy to announce that we have added my cartoonist buddy, Steve Sack, of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, to our newspaper syndication package.

Steve has been one of my favorite cartoonists for decades. Steve’s style is deceivingly cute and sweet, masking some nasty, hard-hitting commentary.  Here are a few of my favorites from Steve’s last year.  I’m still laughing at “Rice Konspiracies” below.

I thought this one was wonderful just because of the way Steve draws helicopters …

I’d suggest that a cool way to spend New Years Day is a stroll through our
Steve Sack cartoon archive.  It is great fun.

Five Reasons Donald Trump is a Joke

So Donald Trump is back in the news today. Apparently, The Donald has decided to endorse Mitt Romney for president in what might be the most awkwardly timed campaign event so far in this campaign. Think about it, after getting slammed over a flub for saying he doesn’t care about the poor, Romney is going to accept the endorsement of the world’s most notorious billionaire, whose catchphrase is, “You’re fired!”

At least cartoonists are ahead of the curve when it comes to Trump. But who’s the more foolish – the fool, or the fool who follows him? Here are five cartoons to help you decide…

Newt Gingrich Cartoons

Newt Gingrich finally made it official, announcing on both Facebook and Twitter that he’s going to run for President in 2012. Actually, his message to his followers was to tune into Fox News on Wednesday night, where he will “talk about my run for President of the United States” with host Sean Hannity (once a Fox shill, always a Fox shill).

What do the nation’s cartoonists think of his chances? Check out our Newt for President cartoon slideshow to find out.

Cartoonists React To Trump And Birth Certificate

Barack Obama was born in the United States. He is officially an American. The President released his long-form birth certificate today in reaction to increasing calls, let by loud-mouthed clown and GOP front-runner Donald Trump, that he was somehow born on foreign land and not eligible to be our commander-in-chief. Trump has latched onto this birther issue, devolving himself as a serious candidate. Based on his reaction to the news today, I might have to change my cartoon to have Trump asking, “Where are Obama’s school records?” I laughed at Nate Beeler’s cartoon for the Washington Examiner, showcasing the resiliency of the birther movement… While Pulitzer Prize-winner Mike Keefe of the Denver Post suggests the birther’s next line of attack… Green Bay Press-Gazette cartoonist Joe Heller shows that the birthers will always find a reason to doubt Obama’s authenticity… View even more cartoons in our new Obama’s Birth Certificate cartoon collection: Obama's Birth Certificate political cartoons
